The Imo State University, popularly known as IMSU, is a state government-owned university located in the heart of Owerri, the capital of Imo State in Southeastern Nigeria. History of IMSU

The first Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor M. J. C. Echeruo, led the team that kicked off the academic activities at IMSU in 1981. The university was originally situated at the former site of G.I.C.M, a Catholic missionary establishment in Owerri. However, in 1985, the university moved to its permanent location at Uturu in Okigwe.

In 1992, the Imo State Government renamed the university as Imo State University, and it became a residential campus located at Owerri. The campuses at Uturu were handed over to Abia State University.
